A fatal train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel censure from critics regarding the speed and execution of the country's major government projects.
The crash took place on the Interoceanic Train, a rail link built to link the Atlantic and Pacific across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was intended to provide an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring economic development in the area.
“We are going to rigorously clarify the reasons behind this tragedy,” declared the head of state.
The president announced that, of the approximately 250 individuals on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in grave condition. The president added plans to travel to Oaxaca to speak with those affected.
Flagship Project of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a signature public works project of the immediate past president, whose term ended the previous year. This rail line was closely associated with his administration's developmental goals for the southeastern region.
Another ambitious rail project from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the wider plan to kickstart the economy of a relatively poorer part of the country.
Project Execution and Worries
The development of both railway systems was supervised by the nation's military, marking a dramatic growth of its duties in public infrastructure. They were executed at an fast-tracked rate, defying expectations to be at least partly opened before the end of that government.
However, this accelerated timeline had simultaneously sparked ongoing concerns over construction quality.
- Sunday's accident was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train this year.
- This involves an previous crash this month when a train struck a truck at a level crossing.
- The other major rail project has also experienced a couple of non-deadly derailments.
Appeals for Investigation and Halt
In the aftermath of the tragedy, the head of a major opposition party demanded an immediate suspension in the construction and operation of all similar projects.
This stoppage was requested until the completion of a comprehensive safety audit. The party declared that the loss of life "demands prompt explanations."
In response, the national leader insisted that the train had been running in full compliance with all security protocols. Assurances were given that the government would be "diligent" in both the development and running of these vital projects.
