Environmental Specialists Welcome Royal Attendance
Sustainability leaders praised the prince's presence. One consultant commented that it would enhance what is likely to be a complex summit, where global agreement on fresh targets for cutting carbon emissions is essential.
"Does the Prince's attendance at Cop a publicity move? Certainly. But that doesn't mean it's a bad idea," the expert commented. "Cop has often been as much about what's termed 'optics' as it is about talks. Prince William's decision will likely motivate other leaders to commit, and will draw international press."
"I suspect HRH is fully aware that by attending, he'll draw millions of eyes to the event. In an period when environmental effects are escalating, but press attention is dropping, any action that draws attention should be applauded."
Royal Attendance at Previous Cops
King Charles has participated in earlier climate conferences, but has decided not to attend in Cop30.
Support from Environmental Organizations
An expert from a sustainability organization remarked: "All hands on deck – and every prominent person like the Prince of Wales, in attendance assisting advocate for the complex task that must be done, is likely a positive development."
"[King Charles was the Prince of Wales when he participated in Cop26 and helped to energize discussions. I don't believe it necessarily requires the prince and the king to go."
Prime Minister's Attendance Still Uncertain
The British prime minister has not yet said if he will attend the meeting, to which all global leaders are invited, with scores already confirmed. He was heavily criticised by leading climate advocates for appearing to waver on the choice earlier this month.
"Global officials should be in Belém for Cop30. Participation is not merely symbolic, it is a test of leadership. This is the opportunity to establish more ambitious national commitments and the finance to deliver them, especially for preparedness" to the impacts of the climate crisis.
"Global citizens is observing, and posterity will record who showed up."
